Leadership Praxis
As a Communication Major, I have discovered the important connection between leadership and communication skills. The ability to effectively convey intentions and share meaning before taking action is a vital skill in many different situations. One particular instance where this connection is important is in my previous habit to assume complete responsibility for group projects due to my impatience with waiting for others. Being someone who prefers working on individual tasks and prides themselves on exceptional time management skills, I would often take it upon myself to complete group assignments promptly and efficiently.
However, as a student pursuing a Communication Major with a Leadership Minor, I have had countless group projects that have made me to reassess my approach. I have since learned that not everyone appreciates having someone else carry out an entire project without providing an opportunity for their input and contribution. Over time, I have come to recognize and appreciate the significance of collaboration, emphasizing the value of exchanging ideas and considering diverse perspectives within different assignments. While the satisfaction of completing tasks ahead of schedule remains, I now understand the importance of prioritizing quality work and taking pride in the collective outcome.
Through engaging in shared experiences and engaging in conversations with my peers, I have gained valuable insights into the significance of allowing others to express their ideas and opinions. Prior to these interactions, I had not fully grasped the profound impact of collaborative work and the benefits that arise from engaging with diverse perspectives. I feel that learning this lesson will be very valuable as I am preparing to transition into the workforce, where teamwork and collaboration are fundamental to accomplishing a wide range of tasks.
I have learned to recognize the importance of communicating with meaningful intentions and sharing meaning before taking action. I have come to appreciate the immense value of collaboration, acknowledging the significance of incorporating different viewpoints and ideas into group projects. These valuable lessons will serve me well as I navigate professional environments that require effective teamwork and cooperation.
